Ammolite is a fossilized, iridescent shell of ammonites.
It has a chemical composition of CaCO3 with 3-4% variable mineral traces, an orthorhombic system, and a hardness of 4.
This fossil is rare. Much of the world's supply comes from a small area along the St. Mary River in southwestern Alberta, Canada.
Ammolites are 70 to 75 million years old.
They are formed as a result of permineralization. Shells are covered by sediment and slowly replaced by nearby materials. Many of them served as siderite concretions, some containing an outer shell layer composted of gem-quality ammolite.
Ammolite's iridescent sheen primarily comes from aragonite. It's iridescence is obtained from great pressure beneath the ground.
Although it's been used by humans for thousands of years, ammolites were first officially described in 1908.
Ammolite was declared an official gemstone in Alberta and the City of Lethrbridge.
Ammolite is also known as 'aapoak', which originated from an Indian Kainah word, meaning "small, crawling stone".
The Blackfoot people had called the material "Iniskim", meaning "buffalo stone".
Other trade names include gem ammonite, calcentine, and korite.
Metaphysically, ammolite is an influential stone. It's believed to have the power to grant miracles and bestow good health, luck, stamina, and high energy.
Ammolite encourages self-worth, practicality, and reliability.
Additionally, it's a protective stone, providing stability and steadiness in one's life.
The Blackfoot people believed ammolites had strong healing powers and often mixed the gem into medicines.
