Moss Agate is a gemsona created by N.R. Wynter. An uptight agate who runs an old weapon facility.

Moss Agate is reliant, strong, adaptable, and with a good sense of duty. She is very loyal to her diamond and despite being stuck in one facility for thousands of years, the agate continues to run it with uttermost care. This is especially so as Moss Agate strives in getting Yellow Diamond's approval. Very stern and can be extremely harsh. She's not afraid to deliver physical punishment when bringing order. Moss Agate is very self conscious and lonely. Thousands of years with lost contact from Homeworld and her diamond weigh heavily on her. She's very fearful that she's forgotten or if Yellow Diamond hated her. Moss Agate tries to bury her feelings, but she takes her frustrations out on the other gems. She has a habit of making problems worse than they already are.

Moss Agate has standard gem abilities. As a quartz, she has high durability and strength.

  • Shovel Proficiency: While a rather odd weapon, it's a versatile tool. Moss Agate can make quick but weaker jabbing motions or more powerful slashing motions. She has it out at all times, jabbing other gems in the back when they misbehave.
    • Drill: The head of the shovel can spin, turning it into a mini drill. Moss Agate uses this to get through harder material.
  • Leadership: Moss Agate has great organization skills and is able to keep herself in charge through striking fear in other gems.

Unique Abilities

  • Moss Manipulation: Akin to her name, Moss Agate can control and create moss.
    • Moss Armor: Crafting and hardening moss over herself grants Moss Agate more durability. As the armor takes more damage, it starts to crumble away.
    • Moss Traps: Giving it sentience, Moss Agate can leave a trap for perpetrators. When a gem or object gets close to it, the moss will lunge at it and ensnare it within itself. Moss Agate can place it around grass to camouflage it.
    • Sentient Moss Soldiers: Rarely used and only done so in emergencies. Moss Agate can create plant soldiers to fight for her. Because these forms are more complex, they're harder to control and move.
    • Moss Repair: Moss Agate can use the plant to repair fissures or cracks in structures.
  • Shovel Earthquake: Slamming her shovel hard enough into the ground can cause a miniature earthquake. It can be strong enough to crack around the surrounding area.

Long before the Gem War, Moss Agate was created to run a gem weapon facility. Yellow Diamond had entrusted the new Gem in keeping Homeworld's weapons safe and Moss Agate was determined to do just that. Given a group of prasiolites and chrysoprases as well as other green colored gems, the agate went to work. She made sure the facility was guarded at all times. Anyone going out of line would be quickly dealt with. Gradually, less gems messaged or visited the facility and fewer weapons were being sent for protection. Eventually, all communications from the outside had ceased. Moss Agate became increasingly paranoid that she had done something to upset Yellow Diamond and tried to get in contact with her. After being scorned for wasting the diamond's time, Moss Agate refused to bother her again. Since then, she continued to run the facility as usual, attempting to ignore the self-doubt and growing loneliness.

Yellow Diamond

Like many gems who serve her, Moss Agate admires and respects Yellow Diamond. The agate is completely loyal to her and would do anything to get her approval or praise. When communication began to cease, Moss Agate was worried she was mad at her. She made the situation worse by trying to contact her diamond and was met with scorn for wasting Yellow Diamond's time. The agate was upset with herself, fearing her diamond hated her. She believed being cut off from the rest of gem society was her punishment. Moss Agate hopes that eventually she can make it up to her by showing how good of a job she's done.

A constant troublemaker who refuses to do his job. Moss Agate is especially hateful of this particular gem as she keeps finding him sleeping all the time. No matter how much physical punishment she gives him, he still ends up doing the same thing over and over again. As much as she would like to shatter him, it would weaken the facility's defenses and can't get replacements.

  • Moss Agate was primarily chosen to keep up with the green theme for the gem facility.

Moss agate in real life.

  • Moss agate is a clear to milky white variety of chalcedony, which is a type of quartz.
    • Like all quartz gems, it has a chemical composition of SiO2, a hardness of 6½ - 7, and a trigonal crystal system.
  • The name comes from its moss-like patterns or inclusions.
  • Moss agate is primarily green, but can also have brown and red colors too.
    • Its green color are contributed by hornblende or chlorite inclusions.
      • Additional colors like brown and red come from iron and manganese dendrites.
  • Although moss agate lacks an agate's banding, which is a definitive feature for agates, it's still classified as one.
  • The gem is sometimes confused for dendritic agate because of similar inclusion patterns.
    • Because moss agate's inclusions come from traces of horblende or chlorite instead iron and manganese ions, it's not classified as a dendritic agate.
      • An exception to this rule is if the moss agate had these ions as well.
  • Agates are formed in fissures or nodules in volcanic vesicles or other cavities. Layers of silica fill in the void and then become a solid mass, creating an agate.
  • Moss agate have been found in India, the United States, Canada, Germany, and many other places.
  • Agate's name was derived from its occurrence at the Achates River in southwestern Sicily.
  • Metaphysically, moss agate represents new beginnings and friendships, abundance, success, and emotions.
    • Called the gardener's stone, it can ensure full crop growths. It helps with fertility of plants and protection of the Earth.
